3Large selection, but very hard to use  Aug 22, 2010
A friend gave me this as a gift. It's a good selection of mostly easy puzzles, with a few Friday level puzzles sprinkled in.

I'm not really interested in the easy puzzles, although I may whip through a couple of them as a warmup. The book doesn't indicate the level of difficulty, so you need to glance at the clues to get an idea.

The big problem is the way the book is bound. On the even-numbered pages, where the grid is on the right edge of the page, the grid is so close to the binding that you literally can't get at it with your pen and pencil. Added to that, the book is bulky and very heavy. I've been carefully tearing out pages one at a time, but even with caution sometimes the page tears, and part of the grid, or part of the clues are torn off. Perhaps if I had a razor handy, or an X-acto knife, I could do it more surgically. Still, perforations would be much easier.

I'd recommend this book if you want mostly easy puzzles of the Monday-Wednesday type. If you can find a good way of getting the pages out or folding the book so that you can right on the even-numbered grids, this will keep you occupied for a long, long time.

5A Year of Entertainment!!  May 28, 2010
Every night before I go to sleep I spend a few minutes working on crossword puzzles. It really focuses my thoughts and I find it relaxing.

Over a year ago I bought this book, and I have only just finished it. I can't tell you I knew every word in every puzzle, but I learned a lot and enjoyed the time spent. The puzzles range from pretty easy to the extremely difficult. They appear to be a compilation of puzzles from perhaps a decade or more, which adds an extra level of challenge to many of the questions, as you have to try to remember recent history. I think for the average, well educated, middle aged puzzle lover, this is well worth the pittance you will spend for many, many hours of pleasure.

It is a very large book, not something to pack in a suitcase or carry in a purse, but if you have a favortie chair where you sit to do your puzzles, it will always be there waiting for you.

3Good, but not great  Jan 09, 2010
I think this is an excellent compilation of crosswords and a good value however there are a couple of things keeping it from being great. The first, though it doesn't bother me so much, is that each crossword is only half a page. This is probably equivalent to their actual size in the paper but I know some people prefer larger print in their crossword books. Next up, the solutions are crammed into the back, something like nine per page, and I find that their small size makes it a little harder to find a particular word that I cannot solve in the puzzle without seeing scanning others by accident. These are minor complaints, what gets this book 3-stars are the following two items. I cannot yet tell and the author doesn't make note of whether the puzzles are in weekday order (and thus difficulty) and all mixed up. He explains how they are mixed up over larger date periods, so a puzzle may be next to one run two years later, but not whether they are in the weekday order most people would expect. Finally my largest problem with the book: each puzzle is not accompanied by its title so you do not know the theme of the harder clues with the long solutions, which makes it very difficult to get some puzzles going.

5Crossword puzzles  Sep 17, 2009
The book arrived at its destination within a few days. However, I just received it from my friend, who brought it back to me from the U.S.
I love the book. It's very challenging and keeping me very busy.

51001 Crossword Puzzle book - New York Times Ultimate  Nov 09, 2008
This crossword book is the best I have ever had. I have been doing crossword puzzles for over 40 years. I like the size of the puzzle itself and the puzzles are semi-hard to solve. I wish they would come out with different books like this with different puzzles in them. I buy the same book every year. I would rather have this puzzle book than any other I have bought. It is a pleasure to work these puzzles.
