5Pretty difficult, but perhaps not the maximum  Aug 09, 2010
I agree with the earlier reviewer that this is not the be-all and end-all of tough Times crosswords. I am about two-thirds of the way through, and I've only encountered maybe ten that I could not finish (I do not consult outside resources to finish a puzzle).

Either Eugene Maleska or Will Shortz once wrote, however, that a truly great crossword, no matter how difficult, should be solvable without recourse to obscure cultural trivia (i.e., you're going to have trivia entries, but they need to be solvable by means of crosses that are not themselves arcane trivia). I would say that virtually all of these puzzles meet that test, and the book has a healthy dose of the rebus puzzles that add a dimension to the problem-solving. I personally can live without the ones that have multipart quotations one must solve, since that reinforces the need to know a lot of worthless junk that Oscar Wilde once said.

Anyway, for the truly hardcore, I suspect this collection might seem a little unchallenging. To them I say: go try the real Times puzzle -- the one that just goes by "The Times." Those puzzles are reeeaally hard. For people who just like fun puzzles that one might have seen every Friday and Saturday over the course of several years in the NYT, this should be more than challenging enough.

Cheap, too.

3The NOT so tough NYT crossword omnibus  Aug 02, 2010
Disappointingly easy! Not nearly as tough as any of the other tough puzzle books by NYT/Shortz.

5Planning a long vacation?  Oct 30, 2008
This collection will keep you busy scratching your head for weeks (months?). I prefer the larger puzzles with more clues/answers and smaller squares, so was a little disappointed in the size of each puzzle on first inspection. These are, however, very tough little puzzles and I'm sure will provide a challenge to most every crossword fanatic.

5200 NYT Friday and Saturday puzzles from 1996-1998  Dec 27, 2007
This volume collects 200 consecutive Friday and Saturday New York Times crosswords originally published between October 25, 1996 and September 25, 1998. Anyone that can power through these challenging puzzles is truly a top solver. With one puzzle to a page both the grid and clues are pleasantly large. At a cost of less than a nickel per puzzle, this 'omnibus' edition offers great value with twice the content of a normal 'NYT Tough' collection.

5Hard ones  Aug 07, 2007
Bored with doing the Friday crosswords in ink? try these. Use a pencil. They made me think.
