2Easy is tough, tough is easy  Jun 17, 2007
By Don Loritz
The Big Book of Sudoku for Dummies rates its puzzles as Easy, Tricky, Tough, and Diabolical. With enough patience, any sudoku puzzle, even one with only one initial number, can be solved. The Diabolical puzzles in this book, and in Heron's earlier collaboration with Edmund James ("Sudoku for Dummies") are in this category: they are truly (and trivially) diabolical. But whereas in the earlier Dummies book the Easy puzzles were mostly Easy, the Tricky were mostly Tricky, and the Tough were mostly Tough, in this volume, as the previous reviewer notes, these categorical assignments appear to have been made randomly.

As Wikipedia notes, sudokus of different difficulty "satisfy different psychological needs." Don't expect this book to satisfy your psychological needs. When you sit down with a puzzle from this book, you never know if it will take ten minutes or hours.

1Big Disappointment  Sep 23, 2006
By S. David Buice "TXHistProf"
I have had reasonably good luck over the years with Dummies books, but this one, as I say, is a big disappointment. The instructions are minimal, and then the author leaves you to more or less "sink or swim" with his array of 600 puzzles. Even the easy ones are quite challenging, especially for a beginner such as myself. If you are new to Sudoku, or if you have gotten into it a bit but are still working to become reasonably competent, I definitely would not recommend this book. Look somewhere else for the guidance you need.

1worthless  Sep 09, 2010

This was the most useless Sudoku book I've ever used. I was looking for something with solving strategies for the more advanced puzzles. The "strategies" in this book are little more than the most basic methods for solving puzzles. I've done plenty of these so I dove right in to the "diabolical" puzzles. After struggling for several days on three separate puzzles with no results, I plugged the puzzles into an internet solver program to see where I was going wrong. After entering the puzzle, it spit back a message saying that the puzzle has more than one solution and cannot be solved with logic alone!! I thought that was the entire point of Sudoku!! Trial and error after filling in 8-10 numbers is not my idea of fun. Save yourself the money and headache and skip this book, unless you feel like bashing you head against the wall for several hours...

5GREAT BOOK!  Jan 12, 2009
By M. Parris "Foxy"
What is there to learn? What is there not to like about this great book? Sudoku is Sudoku! Easy, hard....it doesn't matter. The method of solving is the same, regardless. Once you know how to solve Sudoku, it is simple. Instructions? Who would ever need them? You can either do the puzzles or not and if not......give up and try some other form of entertainment! I love the Big Book of Sudoku for Dummies. Lots of puzzles. Some are more challenging than others but then that is what makes it interesting and yes......challenging! It is a GREAT book! I will buy it again once I finish the one I have so I can do the puzzles again. I love it!
