Great book for the experienced Kakuro solver Aug 04, 2010 Loved the book, loved the difficulty of the puzzles, the size (no tiny puzzles you finish in 5 seconds). This is the ideal book for people who have done Kakuro and are looking for a challenge. It is not for beginners.
the best kakuro book I've owned Jun 25, 2010 I've been doing Kakuro for years. This is by far the best book I've had yet. It has tons of puzzles in it, and they get very challenging near the end. It's a pretty thick book, though -- not a light traveling book.
Very enjoyable Apr 12, 2010 Sudoku was getting a bit stale. The 9x9 grid gets a little boring, regardless of difficulty, and there just aren't that many books with funky-shaped sudoku puzzles (which I love) to change it up.
So I found this to try out. And I love it! This is my first kakuro book, and it isn't exactly a beginner book, as other reviews have stated. But if you are an experienced puzzle solver, starting above beginner level shouldn't be a problem. My 10 year old has done some of the puzzles, too, although I'm not saying it's at his level.
The page with the unique sums is very helpful because I can't remember all of them perfectly. I may have to keep that if other books don't have such a reference.
I've only finished about 60 puzzles so far, but no doubt I will be finishing this book.
Waiting for Vol. 2 Apr 10, 2010 Unfortunately, I am almost finished with Mensa Kakuro. I enjoyed every puzzle so far, and hope that I can find another kakuro book that matches this one in degree of difficulty and puzzle sizing, (12 x 21 grids with large boxes). As the title word 'Mensa' belies, this is a great book for dedicated fans of kakuro, ones with intermediate to advanced kakuro solving ability. No, you don't have to be a genius to enjoy this collection, and I'm for sure living proof of that. Beginners beware, but don't be put off. As stated at the bottom of page 6, "the puzzles get harder as you proceed through the book." Do not assume the first part of Mensa Kakuro is for beginners. There are no 'very easy' puzzles in this collection that beginners can cut their teeth on. The book does contain a well written introduction that explains the rules and basic solving techniques. It also starts with six small 12 x 9 puzzles. But unless one is very familiar with, or has memorized the 'unique sums' of kakuro, this book could be a bit overwhelming. There is an explaination of unique sums on page 7, with a wonderful table that lists every unique sum for puzzles using numbers 1-9, (zeros are not used in this book). If you are a beginner, and really enjoy the challenge of kakuro, I recommend this book. Eventually, beginner puzzles will seem too easy, and that will be the best time to approach Mensa Kakuro.
Good set of puzzles for the Kakuro fan Dec 14, 2009 This volume and the white/green/brown/black belt series are the only volumes I've found with well crafted Kakuro puzzles. I would say the first fifty puzzles or so are on par with the green and brown belt books. The last fifty or so are similar in difficulty to the black belt book. I recommend that beginners try the white or green belt book before this one. Sudoku is purely a logic puzzle - not a number puzzle - and employs no arithmetic or math skills. Kakuro combines simple arithmetic and algebraic logic in a way that I find to be much more entertaining. This is the best all around collection I've seen for the somewhat experienced to skilled Kakuro fan.
Just finished this volume. Wish Conceptis would publish a volume 2. I found no errors in 250 puzzles. Number 170 was the toughest for me. Had to erase and start over like 2 or 3 times.
